Here are a few examples from a recent engagement session, all edited with Fuji Pro 400H Neutral, slightly adjusted to match my personal style. Mastin Labs Portra Pushed Presets for Lightroom are the best foundation for dark and moody portraits. Or just do what I did and buy them! You won’t regret it! Don’t hold me to that, but I’m pretty sure I saw that on their facebook group. They’re $119 each (not bad at all!), and they will change your life! I promise! I didn’t do this, but I think they offer test edits for a few of your images to see if you might like them. If you’ve been debating buying presets, definitely check Mastin Labs out. The b & w Ilford set was worth the money of all 3 of them though! It’s an area I’ve always struggled in, but those presets are magic!

I mainly use the Fuji presets, but every now and then I need something a little warmer which is when I hope over to Portra. I’ve been using them solidly for 6 months now, and I’m in love. While nothing can duplicate film other than film, these do a pretty good job of getting you close. I love the versatility that digital gives me, but also love the softness of film. What are they exactly? They’re Lightroom presets created to emulate film photography. I bought my first pack, Fuji, then my second, Portra, and the minute they released the black and white Ilford, I bought those too. One glance on their website and I was hooked! I HAD to have these presets! All of them! They were glowing, light, airy, but yet crispy all at the same time. What is this Mastin thing everyone is talking about?! It go so annoying that I had to check it out. Like a faint little whisper you’re not sure you heard, but you think you did, “mastin.” Quickly, more people started whispering, “mastin, mastin, mastin.” That whisper started turning into a constant buzz in my ear that I couldn’t shake. While I was on maternity leave, I kept hearing this name pop up in photography forums. Not to mention they’re expensive, and how do you know if you’re actually going to like the effects until you’ve already bought them, and then it’s too late. I didn’t want to feel like I was copying what every one else was doing, and felt like I did a pretty good job of developing an editing style all my own.
